I actually did this painting twice. I did a small version 8 X 8 as a gift for my friend Catherine Ryan Hyde, and then I painted it again on a 36 X 36 inch canvas. This is a photo of the large version.
I did this small 8 X 8 Painting at Christmas time. It was a gift for our wonderful friend Louise. Louise was our neighbor when we lived in Portola Valley. She was beyond a doubt the best neighbor we have ever had.

I have been wanting to do a painting of a child. Just before Thanksgiving we met this wonderful couple, Shannon and Brandon Downing. They showed me a photo of their son Carter and I knew immediately that he was the one I wanted to paint.
